Dealer Locator Leads vs. Leads You Own: The Difference in 5 Years

By Andrew Brockenbush · Published · 3 min read

Every dealer I talk to has a version of the same story. The manufacturer locator sends a lead. The lead is real. The install closes. Everybody is happy.

Then the next quarter comes and the dealer is sitting there waiting for the locator to do it again.

That is the whole problem. Not that dealer locator leads are bad. They are fine. The problem is what you own at the end of five years of running your business that way.

What a locator lead actually is

When somebody searches your brand and lands on the manufacturer's dealer finder, the manufacturer owns that moment. They own the page, the form, the ranking, and the rules for who shows up on it.

You are renting a spot in line. The rent is your dealer agreement and your sales volume. Change either one and your position can change with it.

Leads you own are different. Somebody searched for a generator installer in your county, found your website or your map listing, and called your phone. That path exists whether or not you are still carrying that brand next year.

Five years of locator leads

Run the locator-only version forward and here is where you end up:

  • You do not know what people in your area are searching for, because you never saw the searches.
  • You have no list. No email addresses, no old quotes, nothing to go back to in a slow March.
  • Your reviews sit on the manufacturer's page instead of on your own Google Business Profile (the free business listing that shows up in Google Maps).
  • Your website is a brochure. It has never had to earn a phone call, so it cannot.
  • If you add a second brand, or drop one, your lead flow moves with the brand instead of staying with you.

Five years of leads you own

Same five years, other version:

  • You rank in your own name for install, repair and maintenance searches in your service area.
  • You have a list of every homeowner who ever asked for a quote, including the ones who said no.
  • Your reviews are on your listing, doing work for you every day.
  • You can turn ads up before a storm and down in the off-season because you control the account.
  • You carry whatever brands make sense for your business, because the phone rings for you, not for a logo.

This is not an argument for turning the locator off

Take the locator leads. Take the co-op money that comes with the brand too. That is free demand and you paid for it with your dealer agreement.

But if the locator is your only source, you are running a business with one supplier and no contract. Any dealer who has watched a territory get carved up knows how that feels.

The dealers who sleep well have both. Brand demand on top. Their own demand underneath it, holding the floor.

How to start owning demand this quarter

You do not need a rebuild. You need four things in the right order.

  • Claim and finish your Google Business Profile. Real service area, real photos of your crews, install and repair and maintenance listed as separate services. Our walkthrough is at beefygeneratormarketing.com/gbp-guide
  • Split your website so each service has its own page. A homeowner shopping a $12,000 install and a homeowner whose unit is throwing a code are not the same buyer.
  • Get tracked phone numbers on the site and in your ads, so you know which source produced which call instead of guessing.
  • Ask for a review after every completed job, while the truck is still in the driveway.

The number that proves it

We did this with a Tomball, Texas dealer. Over five months their organic clicks from Google went up 5.8 times, their average position in search moved from 48.7 to 16.9, and we tracked 114 calls at $61 per tracked lead. All of that is verified in Google Search Console, and the full breakdown is at beefygeneratormarketing.com/results

Those are their leads. Nobody can take them back.

Where to start

Pick one: the profile or the website. Fix that one thing all the way instead of half-fixing four.
