When a Big-Box or National Installer Moves Into Your County

By Andrew Brockenbush · Published · 5 min read

It usually shows up the same way. A yard sign you don't recognize. A mailer with a national 800 number. A kiosk at the home improvement store with a generator out front and a clipboard. Somebody with a lot more ad money than you just decided your county is worth selling into.

First reaction is panic. Second reaction is usually to cut price. Don't do either yet.

A national player has real advantages. Bigger budgets. Brand name. Financing offers. A call center. But they also have weak spots that are baked into how they work, and a local dealer can hit every one of them.

What they're actually good at

Be honest about this part, because pretending they're not a threat is how dealers lose ground slowly.

They can outspend you on paid ads. They can show up in the store where the homeowner is already buying a water heater. They often have a slick financing pitch and a sales rep trained on one script. And they can blanket a market with mail.

  • Bigger ad budgets, especially on Google search ads and mail
  • Foot traffic from retail partnerships
  • A recognizable name on the truck or the sign
  • Polished financing offers

Where they're weak

Here's the part they can't fix without changing their whole model.

  • The salesperson usually isn't the installer. The homeowner meets one person, then a subcontractor shows up weeks later. Nobody owns the job end to end.
  • Service after the sale is often a phone tree. When the unit throws a fault code in February, the homeowner wants a name, not a ticket number.
  • Their reviews are spread across the whole country. They don't have 80 reviews from your town with photos of houses on streets your buyer drives every day.
  • Their pages are built for every market at once. They rarely have a real page about your county, your permit office, or your gas company.
  • Timelines are set somewhere else. They can't tell a homeowner exactly how your local inspection process works because they don't run it every week.

Win the map, not the ad auction

You probably can't win a bidding war on paid search ads against a national budget. Fine. The map pack is a different game. The map pack is the box of three local businesses Google shows with a map when someone searches "generator installer near me." Google ranks that box mostly on how close you are, how complete and active your Google Business Profile is, and your reviews. A national brand with no real local office has a hard time there.

So put your effort where they're weakest. Keep your Google Business Profile full and current. Post your installs with real photos from real jobs in real neighborhoods. Build a page for every city and county you actually serve, with local details a national template won't have. More on how we do that here: beefygeneratormarketing.com/services/generator-seo

Make your reviews do the selling

When a homeowner compares you side by side with a national name, reviews are where you win. Theirs say "great service" from someone three states away. Yours should say the tech's name, the town, and what happened during the last outage.

Ask every customer, every time, right after the install and again after the first storm. Answer every review with a real reply. If you need a system for that, here's ours: beefygeneratormarketing.com/services/reviews-and-reputation

Sell the things they can't promise

Your sales conversation should name the difference out loud. Not by trashing anybody. Just by saying what's true about you.

  • "The person quoting your job is the company installing it."
  • "When you call us for service, you get our office, not a national line."
  • "We pull permits in this county every week. Here's how long it really takes here."
  • "We'll be the ones showing up for your maintenance visits."

Answer the phone like it matters

A national call center can answer fast. That's one of their real edges. If your phone rolls to voicemail at 6pm, you just handed them the lead.

You don't need a call center to match them. You need every call answered, day or night, and every estimate booked while the homeowner is still on the line. That's what we built Wingman for: beefygeneratormarketing.com/services/ai-voice-answering-storm-call-capture

Don't race them to the bottom on price

Cutting price is the fastest way to lose a fight you could win. They have more margin to burn than you do. If you drop your price to match a promo, you teach your market that your work is worth less, and you still have the smaller budget.

Instead, make your value easy to see. Show the full price range up front. Talk about payment options early so the monthly number is clear. Show what's included: permits, pad, transfer switch, first maintenance visit, whatever you actually include. A homeowner who understands what they're getting stops comparing on sticker price alone.

Watch where they're showing up

Spend a few minutes a month looking at what they're doing. Search your main keywords from a few towns you serve. Look at who shows up in the ads, who's in the map pack, and whose pages come up below that. If they're winning a town you used to own, that's the town that needs a better page and more reviews next.

The short version

A national installer moving in isn't the end of your business. It's a sign your market is worth fighting for. They'll win some of the buyers who only care about the logo. You win the buyers who care who shows up, who picks up the phone, and who'll still be around in five years. That's most of them, if you make it obvious.
