Lead Generation
How to Get More Standby Generator Leads (Without Waiting for a Storm)
By Andrew Brockenbush · Published · Updated · 7 min read
Every dealer we talk to describes the same pattern: three brutal weeks after a regional outage, then a long, quiet stretch where the crews get sent home early. The dealers who break that cycle are not lucky with weather. They built demand capture that runs whether or not the grid fails.
1. Rank before the storm, not during it
You cannot publish your way into the map pack while the wind is blowing. City and service pages need to be indexed and trusted months ahead of the event. Treat SEO like inventory: you stock it in the off-season so it is on the shelf when demand spikes.
2. Answer every call
The most common leak in this industry is not lead volume, it is answer rate. Fifteen missed calls during a surge, one in five that would have closed, and you have given away three installs in an afternoon. A 24/7 answering system pays for itself on a single job.
3. Sell the calm-weather reasons
None of those reasons need a hurricane. Build pages and ads around them and you generate demand in months your competitors consider dead.
- Medical equipment at home: oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, refrigerated medication.
- Working from home, where an outage costs a day of income.
- Well pumps and septic systems that stop without power.
- Home resale value and insurance considerations.
- Aging parents living alone in the house.
4. Mine your own database
Two years of unsold quotes is the cheapest lead source you will ever touch. Those homeowners already wanted a generator and already got a number from you. A short, well-timed reactivation sequence routinely outperforms cold traffic at a fraction of the cost.
5. Get reviews on a schedule
Review velocity moves both the map pack and your Local Services Ads ranking. Ask after every completed install, respond to every review, and keep the drip going year-round.
6. Work the street you just installed on
A neighbor who watched your truck sit in a driveway for two days and then heard that generator run through the next outage is the warmest lead in your market. Direct mail, door hangers and geo-targeted social to that radius convert far above average.
7. Track booked estimates, not clicks
If your reporting stops at ad views and clicks, you cannot tell which spend produced a sold job. Track calls over 60 seconds, form fills and booked assessments, and feed that data back into your ad platforms so it bids toward jobs, not clicks.
The short version
Rank early, answer everything, sell the non-storm reasons, work your list, and measure booked estimates. Do those five and the storm becomes upside instead of your entire year.
